MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Fox 9’s Top Teacher award goes to Brian Vander Heul, a band and choir teacher at Susan B. Anthony Middle School in Minneapolis. He shares his love of music with hundreds of students every week.
Mr. Vander Heul came up with an online system so that his students could continue learning after school and at home. To do this, the innovative teacher created over 4,000 videos demonstrating how to play and care for various instruments.
“His methods of teaching are very advanced and especially innovative,” friend and retired music teacher Gary Lundgren said. “Brian is a fine musician and very adept in knowledge for all the instruments he teaches.”
Lundgren, who nominated Mr. Vander Heul, said he has a demeanor of patience and understanding.
“He is dynamic in his style of teaching by showing wit, humor, patience, and is able to demonstrate and explain concepts to each and every one of his students no matter what level they are at in their musical growth."
Mr. Vander Heul was awarded a $900 check on Monday provided by Royal Credit Union.
