Information from a Hennepin County search warrant was released on Wednesday in the investigation into the death of Crystal, Minn. 10-year-old Barway Collins. Investigators seized several knives from his family's kitchen after a knife with a patterned handle and silver blade was found yards from where his body was recovered.
The warrant was issued the day Barway's body was recovered from the Mississippi River on April 11, and executed on April 13 out of respect for the family at the Cedarwood Apartments in Crystal, where Barway lived with his step-mom and father, Pierre Collins. Collins was arrested April 13 and is currently behind bars awaiting trial in his son's murder.
When he was found, Barway's feet were bound together with duct tape and a piece of tape was wrapped around his torso. Barway's body was found about 10 feet from shore, at North Mississippi Regional Park, near 53rd Avenue N. and Lyndale Avenue N. in Minneapolis. A knife was found 5 to 10 yards from where his body was recovered.
The warrant aimed to collect any knives, duct tape, medical records, zip ties and any other items in connection to Barway's death. The document also shows authorities tracked Collins using some type of "Google data" on his phone. According to the charges, location data was pulled from Pierre Collins' phone, putting him near the area where Barway's body was found at the time of his disappearance.
He was last seen alive on the afternoon of March 18, when he exited a school transportation van in front of the Cedarwood Apartments. In video footage, Barway looks out the window and is heard referring to his father and a man he calls "uncle." Investigators believe Barway was taken to the river and dumped in a storm water drain.
Following the search, investigators took the following items into custody:
-1 silver blade knife with black handle in a kitchen drawer
