Police: 15-year-old shot dad in the face in Minnetonka

A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody by police after apparently shooting his father in the face at their Minnetonka, Minn. home.

The shooting was reported just before 5 p.m. Monday at the family's home on the 5400 block of Byscane Lane, but police were originally reporting to an explosion. Cory LaVasseur, a father of 5, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition on Tuesday.

The 15-year-old was arrested, unarmed, in the driveway. Police are investigating what happened before the shooting and have not confirmed if it was accidental or intentional. While several of the teenage children were home when the gun fired, no one actually witnessed it, but police confirmed a discussion or argument between LaVasseur and his son preceded the shooting. The shotgun used has been taken as evidence. The case is being investigated by the Minnetonka Police Department and Hennepin County Crime Lab.

On Tuesday, a church group of about 15 people showed up at the house to help clean the scene, but all left abruptly.

The 15-year-old remains in police custody. Investigators said the case will likely go to the county attorney on Wednesday to see if charges are warranted.

"I was working on my porch as I always do and I look out my window and there was ambulances and police cars, so I came running out cause I was concerned it was a neighbor or something that had been hit," neighbor Rebecca McGrath said. She added news of the shooting came as a shock.

"Not much happens around here, nice kids. They are friendly, ya know," she said.
