PHOTOS: 2,000 pigs die in fire at Hector, Minn. farm

About 1,400 hogs and 600 piglets died in a Renville County barn fire on Wednesday afternoon. VIEW PHOTOS

The Renville County sheriff's office responded to a the fire at a hog barn at 79281 County Road 16, about 4 miles west of Hector, Minn.

The barn is segmented into several different areas. Portions of it were fully engulfed in flames, and the winds didn't help. Fire departments from Hector, Buffalo Lake, Bird Island, Olivia and Fairfax and the Hector Ambulance Service were all called in to assist. Tens of thousands of gallons of water were shuttled to the fire scene from neighboring cities.

"Ultimately, an excavator was brought to the scene to pull the building apart in order to extinguish the remaining fire," the Renville County sheriff's office reported.

The building is a total loss and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Renville County sheriff's office. The total value of the loss has yet to be determined. No firefighters or facility employees were injured.
