Passenger killed in Minnetonka Beach, driver swerved to avoid bus

A 52-year-old passenger was killed in Minnetonka Beach after the driver of the vehicle swerved to miss a school bus and ended up hitting a sign and a tree.

The vehicle was traveling east near Shoreline Drive and Lafayette Road and pulled out to pass a semi truck, Orono police said. It swerved back to the right to avoid a school bus while the bus was stopped in the turn lane making a left onto Lafayette Road from westbound Shoreline Drive. As the vehicle swerved back to the right, it clipped the front bumper of the semi, ran off the road and struck a utility sign and tree.

The driver was brought to North Memorial with non-life threatening injuries, and the 52-year-old passenger was killed. Neither were wearing their seat belts. The semi driver was not injured. Police have not released their identities or any more information at this time. The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the incident.
