Minnesota veteran, Japanese POW finally gets his medal

Seventy years after he was held as a Japanese prisoner of war, Apple Valley, Minn. WWII veteran Robert Michelsen, 89, finally got his medal.

Sen. Al Franken pinned Michelsen with his POW Medal at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Medical Center on Sunday.

Michelsen was forced to bail out of his B-29 aircraft after it was shot down over Japan during a bombing run in May of 1945. He was immediately captured and held for several months in Japanese POW camps, where he endured torture and starvation until he was liberated by American forces at the end of the war.

He is a longtime volunteer at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.
