Minneapolis PD new unit looks to curb gang-related crime

The Minneapolis Police Department will launch a new unit focused on gang-related crime this summer. The unit would have a citywide lens, rather than focusing on specific areas of Minneapolis.

Chief Janee Harteau made the announcement at a Wednesday City Council meeting regarding summer crime strategies. The unit looks to curb retaliatory shootings and would have 5 officers and 1 sergeant, the Star Tribune reported.

Minneapolis once had a gang unit, but Harteau said it gradually disappeared.
