Madison Lake woman, Mankato gymnast hurt in car crash

A Madison Lake woman is in critical condition and a Mankato West gymnast has been released from the hospital following an early Sunday morning car crash.

According to the Mankato Free Press, Jody Volk sustained severe brain damage in the incident north of Lake Washington. Volk was airlifted to Mayo Clinic Hospital – St. Marys Campus and is in intensive care.

According to a CaringBridge post:

"Jody was involved in a bad car accident in the early morning hours today (Feb 22, 2015) near Lake Washington. She was airlifted to St Mary's in Rochester, MN where she is currently in ICU. Her body temp was 31 and she has suffered severe brain trauma. She is unresponsive and has had 2 CT scans. We will update more but for now, PLEASE say prayers!"

Maddie Maruska, a senior on the West gymnastics team, was treated at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato and released Sunday afternoon. Maruska competed in two events in the Class A state high school meet over the weekend.

The crash remains under investigation by the Le Sueur County Sheriff's office and the Minnesota State Patrol.
