Go! Go! Sports Girls dolls go beyond hair and makeup

Wander down the girls' toy aisle, and you'll find a lot of pink. Two ambitions moms felt something was missing. Enter Kara Thom in Chaska and Jodi Norgaard.

"Why do we pigeonhole our girls at a certain age to just care about their hair, nails and what they look like, it's damaging," Norgaard said via Skype from her home in Chicago.

She had the idea and created a line of sports dolls that went on the market in 2009. There's Roxy, Ella, Cassie and more, and they're involved in sports like soccer, basketball, swimming, cheerleading and dance. There are 13 Go! Go! Sports Girls in all.

"I had a lot of retail buyers tell me in the beginning they won't sell because they aren't fashion. I dug my heels in and have said, ‘Girls like more than fashion, I guarantee you,'" Norgaard.

Thom teamed up with her a few years later to write books for six of the dolls that went on the market last year.

"The sport in all of these books is just a launching pad for what they learn and how to deal with problems and issues that they are dealing with in their own life," Thom said.

In just a few years, about 100,000 of these dolls have been sold, but they believe there's still a lot of room to grow with more dolls, books and ideas, including a line of reading, science and music girls, and boy dolls, too.

"The possibilities are endless and it's very exciting," Norgaard said.
