Fireworks ignite series of mailbox explosions in Brainerd

Police in Crow Wing County believe someone has been stuffing fireworks into mailboxes, setting off a series of explosions.

On March 29, police responded to a grass fire in the 9000 block of 50th Avenue in Brainerd and determined the fire came from a mailbox explosion. A second fire and another exploded mailbox was located on the 5000 block of Sweet Road, and a third had been reported earlier that morning on Norway Drive on the western edge of Baxter.

That day, a Crow Wing County Deputy made contact with a vehicle on Crow Wing Heights Drive and arrested a juvenile suspect. Police expect more suspects to come out of this investigation. The Sheriff's Office is asking the community to report any other mailbox damage or suspicious activity in the area as the investigation ensues. It is a federal crime to damage a mailbox.
