False alarm on Mississippi River in Hastings

Hastings police confirmed a Mississippi River search near downtown Hastings turned out to be a false alarm on Wednesday morning.

Around 5:30 a.m., police were called to the river near the 1000 block of First Street where a man had reported he and a friend were swimming in the water and his friend was still under. An officer jumped into the shallow water but couldn't find anyone, and Dakota County sheriff's officials conducted a search but didn't locate anyone either.

The individual alleged to be in the water was found asleep at a residence in Hastings and the reporting party had apparently suffered a mental health issue and was taken to Regions Hospital.
