Boston record snow vs Minneapolis snow

Boston continues to get clobbered with heavy snow. Another 16" at Boston's Logan Airport over the weekend and now the city has does something it never has before; snowfall topping 50" in one month and there is nearly 2 weeks left to go!!

The city has seen more snow this month than what falls in a typical year both here and in Boston. In the last 30 days, the city has recorded nearly 90" of snow… that's averaging roughly 3 inches a day or a little over a tenth of an inch an hour for the last month. That's incredible and quite likely something that will never be seen in the Twin Cities. Sure, we have had our fair share of snowy winters and snowy months, but we have never tallied that much snow in that little time… not even close!

You have to go back to November 1991 to even get close to what they have seen this month with back to back blizzards that year giving us our snowiest month on record. In the same time Boston has recorded nearly 90" of snow, we have seen just over 4. That puts us just under 30" down from the winter season average of 54". Granted, we still have 2 months to go and March is typically a snowy month but we are running out of time. On the bright side, 3 of our top 5 snowiest months on record have been in March.

Interesting to note… notice that 4 of the top 5 snowiest months for Boston have all happened in the last 20 years. Is a pattern emerging?

Hmmmm…. Also note that all of our snowy months have been before 1992. We can conclude nothing with any certainty, but it IS interesting… Maybe snow lovers should be moving to Boston.
