BIG CHILL: Minnesota claims lowest temperature in the nation

We have all learned by now that the bright blue skies that come with arctic high pressure also comes with a dose of cold. That was certainly the case across much of the eastern half of the nation and Minnesota and Wisconsin was at the heart of it all.

As most of the country struggled with Thursday morning lows in the teens, Minnesota took it further and claimed the coldest spot in the lower 48 award when Cotton, Minnesota bottomed out at -42.

Here in the metro it was a chilly morning with many locations in the teens below zero.

The official low temperature that will go down in the records books is -11°.

That is where the mercury hovered for a few hours Thursday morning and it's also the in a tie with the lowest temperature of the season set back on January 5th!

We will experience a warm up on Friday as a clipper brings us a chance of snow, then its back into the deep freeze just in time for the weekend.

Stay warm everyone!
