Stage 4 terminal breast cancer fighter swims Lake Nokomis

A morning swim in Lake Nokomis represented a fight for survival for 64-year-old Mary Gooze. She is living with terminal Stage 4 breast cancer, but that didn’t stop her from swimming across the lake and back to raise awareness and raise money for cancer research. TAP TO VIEW PHOTOS

Three years ago, doctors told Gooze the cancer had spread to her bones, and to cope, she took her passion for swimming to help others. She’s a member of the American Cancer Society, and it’s her goal to find a cure.

Her mission is dubbed “One Woman Many Lakes," and it has allowed Gooze to tackle several bodies of water from Wisconsin to Washington. On a gorgeous Tuesday morning in Minneapolis, she took off from Lake Nokomis’ West Bank beach with swimmers, boaters and supporters to cheer her on.
