3 Minnesota-based companies make '100 Best Companies to Work For' list

FORTUNE magazine released their 2015 "100 Best Companies to Work For" list Thursday, and three Minnesota-based companies made the lineup. Allianz Life Insurance Company (#68), Mayo Clinic (#73), and General Mills (#80) were selected among hundreds of companies vying for a place on the list this year, with Google taking the top #1 spot.

"Each of the 100 Best Companies has leaders who genuinely listen to their employees and craft distinctive policies and programs that suit today's workforce," the magazine said. "We like the observation of Scott Scherr, founder and CEO of Ultimate Software: ‘The true measure of a company is how they treat their lowest-paid employees.'"

Minneapolis-based Allianz Life has made the list for four straight consecutive years now, earning FORTUNE's recognition as the top workplace in Minnesota for 2015. The company is a leading provider of retirement income and protection solutions, including fixed and variable annuities and life insurance. Allianz Life employs more than 1,700 people at its corporate campus.

"Our dedicated and passionate employees are the reason Allianz Life has earned a reputation year over year as a top workplace," President and CEO Walter White said. "Our employees are fully committed to our mission to help Americans achieve their financial and retirement goals."

Suzanne Dowd Zeller, Chief Human Resources Officer at Allianz Life, said they regularly survey employees, listen to their concerns, and then try to respond with programs that fit their needs.

This is Rochester-based Mayo Clinic's twelfth consecutive year being recognized by FORTUNE as a company that rates high with its employees. The nonprofit is a worldwide leader in medical care, research and education for people "from all walks of life."

"We congratulate our employees for earning Mayo Clinic this distinction," President and CEO John Noseworthy, M.D., said. "We hope they take great pride in this ‘100 Best' national recognition."

Relationships among staff at Mayo Clinic are built on a foundation of mutual respect, the company said. "Whether you're on the front lines of patient care or supporting the work of your colleagues, your efforts are recognized and valued."

General Mills, based in Minneapolis and employing nearly 42,000 people worldwide, made the list in 2014, 2012, and 2011 as well. Its employees say the company lives up to its motto "Nourishing Lives" in how it treats its people and the community.

"I'm always proud to say that I work at General Mills," one employee told FORTUNE. "They always encourage their employees to do the right thing, act ethically, volunteer and share our skills and time with our communities."

General Mills manufactures and markets some of the world's most famous food brands including Cheerios, Bisquick, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, and Haagen-Dazs.
