The murder trial for Pierre Collins, accused of killing his 10-year-old son Barway Collins, is set for Jan. 4, 2016. The trial is expected to last about 3 weeks.
Five deputies were in the courtroom for Tuesday’s hearing, which lasted a few short minutes. Collins mostly avoided eye contact with the crowded courtroom.
Barway Collins was last seen alive on the afternoon of March 18, when he exited a school transportation van in front of the Cedarwood Apartments in Crystal, Minn. His body was recovered 24 days later from the Mississippi River in north Minneapolis. When Barway's body was recovered from the river, his feet were bound together with duct tape and a piece of tape was wrapped around his torso.
Pierre Collins was indicted by a grand jury for first-degree murder in early June, but waived a court appearance on the indictment. He is now charged with both first- and second-degree murder in his son's death
