North Minneapolis is officially getting a co-op

With a $500,000 brick and mortar federal grant, Wirth Co-op officially has a home in north Minneapolis. They'll be opening doors on Penn Avenue and Golden Valley Road in the New Commons at Penn likely in January 2016.

The next nearest store of its kind is the Eastside Food Co-op on Central Avenue NE, which is credited with helping formulate the business plan. Now, they're looking to lock in 500 members by September.

Wirth Co-op published the following statement on their website:

"The Wirth Co-op Board of Directors has completed its business plan with the help of Amy Fields from Eastside Food Co-op and John Flory from Latino Economic Development We have received a $500,000 brick and mortar Federal grant. This is an exciting time for us. We are doing the hard work of increasing our membership and all the work that goes with coordinating to get our store up and running.

It is not uncommon for it to take 7-8 years to get a food co-op up and running. That means we are right on track. It's a lot of hard work and commitment on the part of those involved. If you have the time to help us out with this work we would love to have you on one of our committees or on the board. Our standing committees right now are Membership, Personnel and Finance."
