A 21-year-old Chicago man is out of prison on parole, but when someone started shooting at him and his mother on the city's South Side, he shielded her body with his own and died saving her life.
The Chicago Sun-Times said James Jones and his mother, Alicia Jones, 46, were on their front porch around noon on Saturday in the 8400 block of South Colfax when a man walked out of a gangway and fired in their direction. His mother was wounded and underwent surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center. Now, three of her four children have died as a result of violence.
Jones had just returned home from buying cigarettes from a neighbor. His aunt told the paper when he was there, someone spoke with him, but Jones rode away on his bike and when he got home, someone had parked a van in the alley and confronted him. The man opened fire as his Jones' mom came outside.
Court records indicate Jones had a criminal record and was on parole after being sentenced to prison for attempted burglary. Police haven't made any arrests in the shooting but said it was gang-related.
