Thanks to West St. Paul VFW Post 4462, 102-year-old Jeannette Pechuman finally has a patriotic piece of her son's life to cherish and hold after mourning his loss for years.
"I had been crying ever since, and I'm Norwegian, so if I've been crying, you know I've been crying," she said.
Brian Pechuman was an Army veteran who died at age 63 after battling 3 forms of cancer. He was buried at Fort Snelling in April after his death in November of 2011. Finally, on June 5, 2015 in the courtyard of the South View Acres Care center, she was surprised with her son's burial flag.
"I was dumbfounded when the major came and handed the flag to me," she said.
Brian, a trained Army sniper, served in Korea from 1970 to 1974, and his service was one of Jeannette's greatest joys. Now, she has a symbol of his service and can finally have peace in her heart.
Sgt. First Class Dennis Becker of the Minnesota National Guard presented Jeannette with the flag, and Budd Trost donated the flag itself.
