Teen baseball player dies after struck by incoming ball in Bemidji, Minn.

A 15-year-old baseball player died after being struck by a ball hit by a batter during a pickup game in Bemidji, Minn. on Sunday.

Police and fire crews responded to the Bemidji High School baseball field at 12:21 p.m. and administered aid to the 15-year-old, who was pitching at the time, after he was struck and collapsed. He was brought by ambulance to Sanford of Bemidji, Bemidji police said, but the Pioneer Press reported he died later on Sunday after being flown to a hospital in Fargo, N.D.

His official cause of death has not been released. Police did not release the boy's name or any further details, but the Bemidji Youth Baseball League Facebook page published the following post expressing their sympathies:

"It is with a heavy heart that our Northern Heat family asks for prayers for the family & friends of Zacharie Schaubhut. May God's love heal your sorrow & may His peace replace your heartache with warm and loving memories. Zach has gone to play at that big field in the sky. May the skies be blue, the grass be mowed & the umpires make the right calls. Until we meet again..."|

President of Bemidji Youth Baseball Bruce Dahlin told the Pioneer Press that Zach had moved to Des Moines, Iowa, last fall and came to Bemidji to try out for a summer league team. Dahlin told the paper he coached the boy when he was 12 and baseball was a very important part of his life.
