A former Minnesota congressional candidate's car was vandalized at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center parking lot on Thursday afternoon, the word "bigot" written in large letters on the driver's door and an apparent upside down Christian cross and upside down Pentagram on the passenger door.
The car belongs to former 5th congressional district candidate and Republican Doug Daggett.
"Was it the religious message on my license plate that they found so intolerable? Or my bumper sticker for marriage as between man and woman? Or my ‘1280 AM The Patriot" bumper sticker?'" Daggett questioned in a news release sent by the Minnesota 5th Congressional District Republican Party.
Rec Center employees helped him remove the scribing with a heavy-duty anti-graffiti remover and city employees will review parking lot surveillance video in hopes of identifying the vandals.
"I was almost hoping it wouldn't come off. I was starting to look forward to driving around, having this on my car as a badge of honor," Daggett said.
Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District Republican Party chair David Pascoe offered the following statement about the incident, adding it's important for the community work together to "discourage illegal acts by extreme activists."
"While I certainly appreciate Doug's calm response to this incident, the unfortunate truth is that thousands of conservatives in this district are afraid to express themselves for fear of a reprisal. I applaud Doug's willingness to stand up for his beliefs. We must work as a community to discourage illegal acts by extreme activists."
