MORE - 2 Minn. men charged with ISIS support
Abdullahi Yusuf, 18, was placed in a St. Paul halfway house instead of being held in custody before his sentencing. Yusuf was intercepted this summer at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport while allegedly attempting to travel to Turkey to fight for ISIS. Court records didn't explain what Yusuf's violations entailed. His bail has been revoked.
The other man charged at the time was Abdi Nur. He was charged in absentia because he boarded a flight to Turkey on May 29, 2014 and has not returned to the United States and is believed to be fighting for ISIS. He called a relative on June 6, 2014 from a phone number with a Turkish country code, and said he had reached his destination and that he would not be calling again. The same phone number was used 3 weeks later by another man who traveled from the Twin Cities to Syria to join ISIS.
According to the charges, Nur assisted Yusuf with making travel arrangements to travel to Syria. At least 9 Minnesotans have now been charged with trying to join ISIS.
