For 20 years, Darryl Christensen's job was to keep order at the Polk County Jail in Wisconsin. Now he may be locked up himself in a storyline that sounds like it was ripped from Orange is the New Black on Netflix.
Prosecutors out of the Attorney General's Office in Madison have charged the jailer with 5 counts of second-degree assault after he allegedly had sex with several inmates. A veteran sheriff's office employee, Christensen's charges paint a disturbing pattern of sexual assault, misconduct and abuse of power.
Allegedly, there was unwanted touching, and groping that escalated to sex with female inmates in corners of the jail facility where there were no security cameras and little chance of him getting caught, including brazenly between the courts and the holding cells inside the justice center.
One victim, identified only by her initials, told investigators that Christensen would control door access to the cellblocks so he could keep them closed while he was sexually engaged with an inmate.
He also would rely on mirrored one-way glass to shield his behavior from others in their cells.
She said as the sexual encounters continued, she felt obligated and then controlled by the defendant. "Powerless" was how she described her situation.
When confronted with the initial allegations back in October, Christensen immediately resigned after nearly 20 years on the job. It would also cost him another position. He served as fire chief of his hometown department down the road in Amery.
A source told Fox 9 Christensen ate, slept, and breathed firefighting but left his post abruptly in January after five years at the helm. A department display still stands proudly in his front yard.
Christensen apparently has a wife and three children. He allegedly told his locked up victims that they could never talk about the sex or his advances, that also included allegedly suggesting that a couple of female inmates strip down and touch each other when he flashed on the lights in his observation office.
He warned that his behavior would not only cost him his job, but his wife as well.
Christensen will make his first court appearance on these charges in a couple weeks.
