A 27-year-old hiker from Duluth, Minn. died in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on Monday after he got ill on a trip with friends. They had been hiking together since Friday.
On April 20 at 6:11 p.m., St. Louis County sheriff's officials learned the man, whose identity has not been released, was hiking with friends in the Devils Cascade area on the Sioux-Hustler trail – a remote area near Lower Pauness Lake -- with two other friends. First responders discovered the man had died upon arrival. The trio had been hiking in the area since Friday, April 17 and the man became ill while hiking, unable to continue on come Monday.
The nearest town is Orr, Minn.
His death does not appear to be "suspicious" at this time, sheriff's officials said, but an official cause of death is pending autopsy. The incident is under investigation by the St. Louis County sheriff's office.
