The Bouwens family is asking for privacy, but shared the following statement through Regions Hospital on Thursday:
"We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers for Sophia. We ask for privacy at this time so that our family may focus on her healing."
A GoFundMe website has been set up to support the family, and in just a few days, close to 800 people gathered to raise over $45,000 to help them. You can help by visiting this link: http://www.gofundme.com/p33jfk
The website, set up by friend Nikole Mitchell, says the crash "resulted in multiple facial fractures, two jaw fractures, and a fracture at the base of her skull/top of her spine."
"I know that when she gets through this, she's going to give back to the community two-fold everything that's been given to her," Bouwens' friend Amanda Leaveck said.According to St. Paul police, Bouwens' car was hit around 7:30 p.m. at North Cypress Street and Sixth Street East. Police identified the driver as St. Paul woman Danielle Sivels, 30. Police added Sivels got out of her car and walked away and was found at her house smelling of alcohol with a broken ankle. She has been released from jail but has not been charged as police continue to investigate the incident. Sivels' record includes two DWI convictions and multiple driving offenses dating back to 2004.
