Wayzata District mourns passing of longtime principal Mr. G

Dennis Grasmick worked as a principal for 38 years, devoting his life to education and helping others. Earlier this week, Grasmick, known to students at Oakwood Elementary in Plymouth, Minn. as "Mr. G", passed away suddenly.

Students at Oakwood study a variety of subjects and this week they are learning a lesson in mortality.

"It was a shock because we had no idea," said Bernie Hanson, who is a parent of two students at Oakwood elementary in Plymouth.

District officials say Grasmick worked for the district for 15 years, including over a decade at Oakwood.

"He was very laid back. Very open to listening to parents. He was well liked by the kids," said Kim Larson who has a fourth grade son attending Oakwood.

On Wednesday, the district sent an email to parents alerting them to what happened and telling them counselors would be available for anyone that needed one. A tough time for a man who was so involved in the school he oversaw.

"He was very involved in the actives; the bingo, the family nights. My daughter worked with him to stop bullying campaign so she was disappointed he won't be around for that anymore but overall just a friendly guy," said Hanson.

Parents who we talked to on Friday say they are going to use this as a teachable moment to talk to their kids about death.

"We talked about it and in our family we believe in heaven and we talked about how he's in a better place," said Larson.

Students say Grasmick was a popular principal, whether he was walking through the halls or joining them at lunchtime, he always a constant presence with his students.

"At lunch, I kind of miss him because sometimes he comes and eats with the kids," said Kim's son, Austin.

Students in his 4th grade class made flowers with their favorite memories of Mr. G on them to post inside the school.

"He will be greatly missed," said Kim.

The funeral for Grasmick will be held on Monday at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Bloomington.
