March is the month of crazy changes here in Minnesota and during the week ahead it will live up to that crazy reputation. First of all let's put things into perspective as we have been well below average temperature wise for quite some time now.
However, we are about to take the thermometer to average and beyond starting this weekend! There are a lot of firsts for this third month of the year, including the big 5-0 and 6-0. If we take a look at the average first time of hitting these temperature milestones, we see that our first 50° occurs on March 9 and our first 60 occurs on March 29.
Last year we were pretty close to these with our first 50 and 60 falling just one day behind, on the 10th and 30th respectively. If you're wondering about the first 70°, well that milestone usually occurs on April 11th. We will save the 80s and 90s for another blog.
The reason behind this pattern change is a shift in the jet form a North-south flow to more of a West-East flow.
Although bad news for Alaska, this "Zonal Flow" will correct the wrongs we've seen this winter and give us a much deserved shot of spring. A warm up that will actually put us ahead of the temperature curve for a change.
