That is quite a bold statement and we have all learned by now that the winter season here in the Upper Midwest does not play by the rules. In fact, meteorological winter ends on February 28 and real winter ends on March 20. However, here in Minnesota we tend to stretch winter out like a rubber band around a Sunday newspaper. Last year we saw our last below freezing high temperature on MARCH 25. Its February 26th that we, on average, see our first ABOVE freezing high temperature. When it comes to flakes, we saw them fly at late as APRIL 29 with our last trace of snow. To be fair, our last measurable snowfall was a whopping 6.5" that fell on APRIL 3-4, 2014.
Nevertheless its always fun to look at averages and the chart below shows the end of the coldest 90 day stretch of winter for the lower 48.
Take a close look at the metro, where we tend to straddle the line between the last week of February and the first week of March. Either way, its almost OVER!
Hang in there everyone, its almost over!
