Iconic Duluth landmark missing in Lake Superior

An iconic piece of Duluth is missing somewhere in Lake Superior.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, part of "Uncle Harvey's Mausoleum," also dubbed, "the cribs," disappeared sometime between New Year's Day and Valentine's Day. The concrete pillar stuck out of the water near Canal Park. It's nearly 100 years old, and it's a popular fixture in the summer, especially for swimmers and divers.

A freediver who calls himself "Lake Superior Aquaman" has a theory, and his project this summer is to "find that thing," he said on his Facebook page.

He said the column was made of timbers sheathed in concrete, but much of that concrete below the water has eroded, leaving bare wood behind. He added it was "only a matter of time" before it disappeared.

The structure was there in the first place as the foundation of a sand and gravel unloading dock. Learn more about its history here.
