The fallout of Target Canada's failure has hit employees in Minneapolis. About 550 employees in the Twin Cities are learning their jobs will be eliminated as the retailer pulls out of Canada.
Target said about 350 employees were laid off Wednesday, and the remaining layoffs will take effect when Target finishes liquidation of its 133 stores in Canada by mid-May.
Target is still the largest employer in downtown Minneapolis, according to figures compiled by the Downtown Council, but they've cut more than 20 percent of their downtown workforce in the past year. Downtown's 15 largest employers employ about 50,583 people, with roughly 10,000 employed by Target.
