Fox 9 honored with Page One awards

FOX 9 was recognized Tuesday night by the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists (MN-SPJ) with two first place awards for newscast and investigative reporting.

The First Place Newscast award went to The Reporters, a Sunday morning news show that aired during Summer 2014. The half-hour show, anchored by Tom Lyden, looked at the weeks news through the perspective of Twin Cities reporters covering the stories. Judge's said, "The show consistently covers difficult issues with sensitivity and balance, while using good storytelling to maintain viewer interest." The show was produced and edited by Brian Wiedeke and Brad Swagger with Lori Fisher and Ted Johnsen.

First Place Investigative went to The Maidens of River Road, a story on cult leader Victor Barnard and the alleged sexual abuse of underage girls. The story led to criminal charges and an international manhunt for Barnard who was recently apprehended in Brazil and is awaiting extradition. Judge's said the story is " outstanding example of reporting for the public good and the attempt to seek justice for those who can't successfully access the system." The story was reported by Tom Lyden and photographed and edited by Brian Wiedeke.
